6A- Identifying Opportunities in Economic and Regulatory Trends

1) In the New York Times, I saw a article on how Trump is walling off Huawei, the equivalence of the US's Verizon or AT&T. Headlining the business section of the New York Times was this article and it made me think about the opportunity for 5G coming soon. You will be able to download media onto your phone or device almost immediately. A movie would take 3 seconds to download rathe than the 15 minutes it takes in 4G. I believe that 5G will exist in the US because we will always be fighting to be most technologically advanced in the world. Since Trump banned Huawei, the US will have to make their own 5G and catch up with China. Every individual on the grid will benefit from 5G when it comes out. The process of getting 5G will be automatically updated in the software updates of phones. Samsung has already started to use the 5G icon for cell connection even though they don't in fact have 5G yet. Fake it until you make it, right? At least for them, but soon enough 5G will actually become a thing. I am like many others who think this opportunity will come to fruition and that the US will get 5G. Some may disagree and say that it will never happen but they are not seeing the world clearly. If China supposedly has 5G now, we are not far behind. I personally formed the belief because I keep up with the modern day trends and technology gets better everyday so we cannot be far off. Since Trump banned Huawei, we will have it in our domestic wireless networks.

2) Another economic article I found in the New York Times surrounds tree trimming in California. There is not enough tree trimmers to maintain the entire area that they need to. Tree trimming entry jobs go for 15 an hour while mastered technicians get paid up to 30. This obviously created the idea of another company to take over a large majority of the tree trimmings. There could be a huge organization startup tree trimming company in the areas the ones cannot reach now. Certain places in California are too dangerous or big for companies to trim. My idea is that the occupants of California who live places where current companies cannot come cut their trees can hire my company to come out and do it for them. We will take entry level workers and transition them to masters. This opportunity is hypothetical easy to imagine but the process of actually making another huge tree trimming company inc California big enough to cove everywhere the current companies can't would be the challenge. Personally, I feel this could be an opportunity because I have history in working construction at high heights. I am sure that I could hone in on hiring scaffolding company workers who are used to climbing and removing items and make them my main workers.

3)   In the LA Times, there was a story about a particular AirBnb client. This being posted in a major newspaper like the LA Times means that it is a big story and entail poses as an opportunity. The article says how an individual rented out an AirBnb and trashed it. Also, while she trashed it, she abused the no smoking rule, used drugs, and used the house as a prostitution home. The individual fights in her defense and blames the owner and says that it is discriminating and that she is going to sue the owner. It is a crazy story but it leads to my opportunity of what if there was a way as an Airbnb owner to further scout your occupants besides the background Airbmb does as a company that isn't like Whitepages or any other criminal record lookup site. What if there was a website that owners could use to primarily hone in on how clean or sanitary possible renters are based on past rentals. A seperate website that track everything from hotel stays to long term rentals. They can say whether or not the tenant is clean and a good renter or bad and like this lady. I highly recommend reading the article because what they say happened in the Airbnb is unbelievable. I think if a website like this existed, it would be a smash hit to renters everywhere going to random people. The opportunity would not be the easiest to make as there are so many possible renters in the world that would need to be checked but somehow. It all could start somewhere though. Like white pages does criminal background searches, this could be the same for renter cleanliness. You could rate renters like uber rates clients. I bet this topic has been discussed before by many people as I am sure that this lady was no the first to trash Airbnb. The problem would be finding the legal way to find all of this information on everyone and starting the website. I bet if there was a website like this, you could run in for a profit because renters would be willing to pay for this information.

4)   In the Tampa Bay Times, there is an article on Kirby Smart and how he doesn't't rule out moving the Florida Georgia Game out of Jacksonville. This is obviously an opportunity for the major football cities. The stadium that they play in is not as nice as the potential stadiums in the region and I see this being a huge opportunity for the nicer stadiums. It is probably unlikely for the stadium to change as it has been played there forever but the opportunity from a football coach saying he does not know if it will stay a permanent thing is a start. The potential customer for this game would be essentially every stadium owner int he Southeast. This is one of the markee games of the year and both teams have huge crowds. It is a mega money game and any owner would be happy to have this game in their stadium. This opportunity would be relatively hard to do since the teams have been playing there for along time and put has become a tradition. A lot of people I am sure have seen this statement by the hated heath coach of Georgia and the opportunity has probably been salivated over by stadiums throughout the Southeast. I doubt the game stadium will ever change though. I would like to see the change though because the Jacksonville stadium is no where as nice as newer stadiums thought out the southeast.

  1. I think most people would gladly welcome better speeds so I think the first opportunity certainly has a market. Any sort of implementation might prove difficult though. Tree trimming in California has a bit of distance but developing better methods for this could prove to be helpful in more places than just there. Insurance for AirBnB could certainly be a route to take the third opportunity. Marketing the stadiums and improving them could be the route to take for the fourth.

  2. Hey Jack, I also like to keep up with technological trends. I do wonder if China truly does have 5G. I don't see why the President would have signed for us not to use Huawei. If we use Huawei then we are giving China money. I see in the future whoever is the most technologically advanced will be the superpower of the world. Hopefully we can catch up to China and come out with our own 5G. I don't see why we couldn't. Verizon and At&t are huge companies. Only time will tell who win the technology race.
