9A- Testing the Hypothesis

A new cast design that can be washed and has slots for skin care.

I actually had my cast taken off today and when I went there conducted my five interviews.

Person 1- I first talked to a middle aged woman who had almost the same arm injury I did, a fractured radius. We both had on the same cast and had it on for the same amount of time, 3 months. I told her about my idea and asked her who she thought would not be able to use it and she told me about her surgery and before her hard cast, they ultimately just put you in a sling because of the danger of closing up permanently stitches. She also said the need differs from others and she came up with my idea could only be used on certain bones, like a forearm. Also yes, she said the outsider's need who cannot take advantage of my cast has different needs.

Dr. Anderson - The second person I talked to was my doctor. He is a casting specialist and he laughed about my idea but I ultimately got him to realize the need. When talking about it, he identified that only a small amount individuals could benefit from my idea, as it only would be possible on fractures because complete breaks tend to need surgical repair and in that case need removable casts. He also talked about how it would be be able to be put on any joint. My idea differed from another need any time it wasn't a simple fracture and bone specific. Yes, the underlying cause of the outsider's need is different than the insiders. That being said he told me that he liked my idea and he said could help a lot of people.

Person 3- The third person I talked to was a older gentleman sitting in the lobby waiting to see the doctor. I asked him the three questions and he told me that people he thought older people would especially like my cast design because of the longer period of time that they are required to be in a cast. He thought the outliers would be like the first two said, anyone who needed surgery and needed a different cast entirely. The point at which they differ would be the severity of the break and what bone specifically. The underlying cause would be which bones they broke and the severity of it. He loved my idea.

Person 4- After the third older gentleman, I though to narrow it down on older individuals so when I went to visit my grandma in her nursing home, I talked to one of her friends who had suffered a broken wrist. She had a simple removable cast on for her injury. I told her about my idea and she told me that she wouldn't wear it because it couldn't be as easily removed. Even though it shouldn't be removed at all for the risk of re-injuring the broken bone, she liked how it made it more accessible. So another outlier would be individuals who just do not want to wear a permanent cast. My point differs from another need when the individual who should be wearing a permanent cast refuses. The underlying cause of the outsiders need is yes indeed different than the insider.

Person 5- I talked to a nurse at the nursing home and discussed my idea. When talked with her she reiterated what I kind of found out with the my grandma's friend. Older people tend to not like permanent casts because of the restrictions and the increased chance of skin problems and other problems. In which case, individual number three was an outlier out what I learned from the nurse's opinion. Yes, once again the outliers need is different than the insider's need.

Inside Boundary                                                                  Outside Boundary

- Individuals with simple fractures                                      - Any broken bone that requires a surgery
of specific bones                                                                  or a bone that cannot be used on, also
older people who just don't want it
-  Having a permeable cast for easier
cleaning and less susceptible skin                                    - The need is not a treat-all broken bones
   damage                                                                                 solution

- The need exists because of the smell                                 - Alternative solutions would be slings for
a cast can make and the chance of                                        broken bones or non permanent casts
  skin infection and irritation.

I found that only a limited amount of people would be helped by my idea. It can only be used on certain bones and depends a lot on the severity of the injury. Also, even the people who it could help may not want to wear it because it is too permanent. It is still a "good idea" but it also would be much more expensive to conduct than the casts used today.

Comments

  1. Hey Jack,
I think although there are other solutions such as a sling would be less expensive and less bothersome; in the long run I feel as if the bone does not heal the same in the sling as in the cast. Casts are not only heavy, but irritating and bothersome. Casts can also develop infections from its collection and absorption of sweat, dirt and other moistures baking in the wrapped arm.
